Cool your neighborhood — plant a tree!

By planting trees, we bring cooling shade and natural beauty while helping to address climate change. We’re working closely with residents and the community to make trees and urban greening accessible to everyone.

Read the Steps to Take to find out how to plant a tree in your community, and check out the Deep Dive section to read more about the benefits of planting trees.

Steps to Take

  1. Visit your local nursery and purchase a sapling. Follow the instructions they give you. Its not too hard!
  2. If you don’t have the space or time to plant a tree of your own, try donating to an organization that plants trees for you. Check out this charity that does just that:

Deep Dive

Why does planting trees help our planet?

1. Trees clean our air

Through their bark and leaves, trees draw toxins and pollutants from the air.

2. Trees fight climate change

Through photosynthesis, trees absorb carbon dioxide and in turn produce oxygen. By taking more carbon out of the atmosphere, trees combat global warming.

3. Trees prevent soil erosion

The roots of trees hold soil in place, firming up the soil and making the area around them more weather resistant.

4. Trees prevent flooding

By absorbing large amounts of rainwater, trees prevent flooding in the area around them.

5. Trees support biodiversity

By feeding and housing a wide range of organisms from birds to mammals to insects to fungi, trees support variety in ecosystems.
