Are You a Renter? Start saving on your electric bill — Claim what’s yours.

Even if you don’t own your home, you already pay into energy efficiency programs via your electric bill. Why not benefit from them? As a renter in Massachusetts, you may be eligible for no-cost energy efficiency upgrades and devices through Mass Save:

  • Air sealing to block leaks and drafts
  • Programmable or smart thermostats to cut heating or cooling costs
  • Smart powerstrips that reduce “phantom load” when devices are idle
  • Low-flow showerheads and faucet aerators to reduce hot water use

And, if your landlord cooperates, you may qualify for:

  • Insulation upgrades (attic, walls)
  • Heating or cooling system upgrades

To get started, call Mass Save at 1-866-527-SAVE (7283) or schedule a no-cost Home Energy Assessment.

Steps to Take

  1. Call Mass Save at 1-866-527-SAVE (7283) to request your no-cost energy assessment.
  2. During the assessment, you and/or the Energy Specialist review your home and identify efficiency opportunities.
  3. Use your smart powerstrip correctly:
    1. Plug your devices with remotes (TV, cable box, game consoles) into the “control outlet”
    2. Plug items that don’t need to run continuously (amplifiers, receivers, chargers) into the “switched outlets”
  4. Replace showerheads and install faucet aerators in kitchen and bathrooms. These small changes can noticeably cut your hot water usage and energy costs.
  5. If insulation or HVAC upgrades are recommended and your landlord agrees, you can pursue the larger upgrades.

Deep Dive

What services are available for renters

Mass Save’s Renters page explains that in addition to no-cost assessments, renters may get devices and partial support for equipment like smart thermostats or efficient appliances.

Under the multi-family / landlord program (for 1–4 unit buildings), the property can get no-cost air sealing, 100% off insulation upgrades for eligible units, equipment rebates, and 0% HEAT loan financing.

Income-eligible or low-to-moderate programs

If your household meets income limits, you might qualify for no-cost weatherization, insulation, air sealing, and even heating and cooling upgrades.

Mass Save’s upcoming 2025–2027 plan is expanding renter access. Renters in Designated Equity Communities (DECs) may automatically qualify for no-cost weatherization, barrier remediation, and electrification upgrades.

Landlord / Building Upgrades

Because many of the highest-impact upgrades require structural changes, they often need landlord approval.
Mass Save’s new plan also includes protections: landlords must commit not to raise rent due to improvements, and energy costs to tenants shouldn’t rise.

Why it’s no-cost (or highly subsidized)

The costs are funded through utility ratepayer funds, you already partially pay for this via your bill.
Recent updates mean more of the funding is being directed toward renters and equity communities.

Limitations & Considerations

  • Some upgrades (insulation, HVAC) require landlord consent or building-level permits.
  • Processing of rebates and incentives may take weeks.
  • Not every home qualifies for all measures; each assessment is tailored.
