Want to make your living space more comfortable? Well insulated walls eliminate drafts and cold spots, enhancing your home’s comfort. Having adequate insulation in your ceiling and exterior walls also saves you money on heating and cooling  A well insulated attic stops heat loss in the winter and blocks heat gain in the summer, and can save you up 30-50% in energy bills.

And it might be FREE!

When you complete a Mass Save assessment, you may qualify for a range of incentives and rebates:

  • Instant no-cost energy-saving products (delivered to your home) like LED bulbs, smart thermostats, power strips, low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators.
  • Insulation & air sealing rebates: Mass Save may cover 75 % up to 100 % of the cost of approved insulation and weatherization work, depending on your income qualification and home conditions.
  • Equipment rebates: For qualifying heating, cooling, and water heating systems (especially heat pumps).
  • 0 % HEAT Loan financing: Up to $25,000 for eligible upgrades like insulation, heat pump installation, batteries, etc.

Special offers for renters/ landlords: For 1-4 unit properties, there is a limited-time offer for 100 % off approved insulation upgrades and incentives on equipment.

Steps to Take

For Virtual or In-Person Assessments

  • Sign up: Schedule a no-cost virtual or in-person assessment (you can call 1-866-527-SAVE or go through the Mass Save site).
  • Preparation: You’ll be asked for your electric or gas account number, and in the case of a virtual assessment, to provide photos of HVAC systems, attic, walls, basement, etc.
  • During assessment: The Energy Specialist evaluates your home’s envelope, heating/cooling systems, ventilation, insulation, and identifies opportunities for weatherization or equipment upgrades.
  • Recommendations: You will receive a customized energy report with suggested improvements, eligibility for rebates, and next steps.
  • Scheduling upgrades: If you approve, upgrades like insulation or air sealing will be scheduled. Work is only done once safety, state oversight, and program requirements are confirmed.
  • Delivery of no-cost items: Items like LED bulbs, efficient thermostats, and water-saving devices may be shipped to your door for you to install.
  • Apply incentives: After approved work is done, you claim rebates or financing through Mass Save.

If you’re in a condo or multifamily property, the multifamily segment may be handled via a Multifamily Market Integrator (call 1-800-594-7277).

Deep Dive

Virtual Assessment Details

The virtual assessment typically lasts up to one hour, conducted by phone with support via photos or video. You may need to upload or send images of your home’s systems (attic, HVAC, walls, wiring). If weatherization or insulation opportunities are identified, a follow-up in-person visit may be scheduled for installation.

Why It’s No Cost to You

If you’re a customer of one of Massachusetts’ regulated utilities in the Mass Save program, your participation in the Home Energy Assessment is funded through energy efficiency charges already built into utility rates. Thanks to legislation (e.g. the Green Communities Act), utilities are obligated to provide energy efficiency services to customers.

Had an Assessment Before? Get One Again

If it’s been more than two years since your last assessment, you can schedule another. Improvements in technology, new incentives, or changes in your home (renovations, aging systems) may open new opportunities.

Even if you already received insulation recommendations, you may still qualify again and possibly have new portions fully covered under enhanced incentives. Check with your prior assessment provider to determine eligibility.

Also, if you’re aiming for deeper efficiency goals (e.g. net-zero, full electrification), we can connect you with a Home Energy Coach to guide your path forward.
